PREMIER LEAGUE: DUBRAVKA IN SENSATIONAL FORM

Newcastle United shot stopper Martin Dubravka was in sensational form as the Magpies secured a well deserved draw at the home of Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Slovakia national team goalkeeper Dubravkamade several saves to keep Liverpool at the bay. The Slovakia goalie produced a man-of-the-match performance to ensure that his team secured a point in the battle to avoid the drop at the end of the season.

Egyptian player Mohamed Salah produced a moment of magic to give hosts Liverpool the lead as Slovakia national team player Dubravka had no answers to his goal in the third minute. Liverpool should have extended their lead easily if not for the brilliance of the abovementioned Dubravka plus poor finishing from the Liverpool forwards especially Diogo Jota in the first half.

Liverpool paid for the poor finishing at the end of the game after second half substitute Joe Willockearned a point for the visitors. His shot deflected off Reds midfielder Fabinho and into the back of the net with virtually the last kick of the game. The Reds had been warned moments earlier when substitute Callum Wilson equalised for the Magpies before his strike was ruled out for offside.

Newcastle United was able to win a point to move nine points clear of Fulham thanks to the fourth league goal of the season fromArsenal loaneeWillock. Joe Willock is on loan at Newcastle United from Arsenal. He signed for the Magpies on loan in the winter transfer window in January.

The draw was not a good result for Liverpoolwho lost grounds on Chelsea in the race for Champions League football. The Reds are now four points off the Blues with five games remaining. They have to make up those four points to feature in the Champions League and not the Europa League next season.

SLOVAKIA STARTS QUALIFIERS AGAINST CYPRUS

Slovakia will target victory when they take on Cyprus away from home in the first of ten qualifiers to decide whether the country would be represented at the World Cup 2022 in Qatar at the end of next year. Several countries on the European scene would be battling it out as the European qualifiers for Qatar 2022 begin. The World Cup tournament in Qatar is scheduled to take place for the final two months of next year. The tournament starts with the opening ceremony and the opening match on November 21 before it ends with the closing ceremony and the final match on December 18.

In the European qualifiers, there are ten groups and the winners from each of the groups will qualify for Qatar 2022 automatically, while the runner-ups will have to navigate their way to the tournament via the playoffs. For Slovakia, they have been drawn in a relatively easy group and the chances of finishing as the group winners couldn’t be better in comparison with the other groups. For the group draws, Slovakia were in pot 2 alongside the likes of Wales, Romania, Switzerland, Poland, Sweden, Austria, Serbia and Ukraine. Turkey were also in the second pot. At the end of the draw, Slovakia got Group J alongside Slovenia, Russia, Croatia, Malta and Cyprus.

Slovakia would be guests of Cyprus in their first World Cup qualifier on Wednesday night before they take on lowly Malta at home at the weekend. The Russia game would be their last qualifier until September 2021 when the Slovakians would resume their qualifiers with a tricky trip to face Slovenia.

LAVEZZI RETIRES FROM SOCCER

Former PSG forward Ezequiel Lavezzi is hanging up his boots at the age of 34 after playing his last match with Chinese Super Lig side Hebei.
The Argentine, before moving to France made his name at Napoli together with Slovakia international Marek Hamsik. The duos time coincided with the rise of Napoli from being a perpetual midtable team to once who has grown to qualifying for the UEFA Champions League on a regular basis to challenging Juventus for the Serie A title and affording to fire Carlo Ancelloti.

Lavezzi also enjoyed his time at PSG being one of the many big money purchases the Parisians made in hope to level up with the crème de la crème of European football.
His partnership with Uruguay forward Edison Cavani remains one of the most electrifying ever witnessed in Parc de Princes rivalled only at the time, by the one in Bavaria between Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben.

Cavani is still at PSG while the old guard of Ibrahimovic and Lavezzi have made the rounds at other continents. Despite the arrival of Mbappe and Icardi, Tuchel’s decision to keep Cavani around is testament to his longevity as a professional.

The forward has been at the club long enough to know when exactly his services isn’t needed anymore and once that time comes, he will make the switch. To MLS most likely.
Lavezzi’s old guard at Napoli on the other hand appeared to have dispersed. With Marek Hamsik being the last member of such formidable group to dispatch. The Slovakian only left Naples this year and will forever remain the most loyal professional to grace the grace of Naples in recent times.
Lavezzi also enjoyed time with the Argentina national side but it was at the later stages of his career.
